Orthodontic Instructions

Now you have received one of the most modern appliances for the correction of mal-aligned teeth. The complete appliance consists of brackets (BRACES), Bands, Tubes, Archwires etc. Time to time more attachments is placed depending on specific requirement which may differ from patient to patient. I request you to take care of the appliance by following the given precautions:

DIET In general, avoid anything very hard or sticky! These foods may loosen bands or break off brackets from the teeth causing damage and delay in your treatment.

Cut your foods into small pieces and chew slowly and carefully to avoid breaking, bending or loosening your appliances (braces). Almost anything can be eaten as long as it is cut into small pieces and eaten slowly with care.

NON-VEG. consumers, avoid consumption of Mutton, avoid chewing bones, and eat soft, well-marinated meat, preferable in small pieces. Prefer boneless meat.

AVOID eating the following:  Chewing gum, candy, whole apples, caramels, hard candies, gummy bears.

AVOID BITING into Hard cookies, nuts, pretzels, donuts, and pizza crust. There are still many foods you may enjoy if you are just careful: apples, pears, raw carrots, celery, crusty bread sandwiches, bagels, and meat on a bone can be cut up in small pieces or strips and eaten on your back teeth. Pizza and burgers are okay but in small pieces. Just use your knife and fork instead of your front teeth.

Never try to bite anything from the front teeth, even the softest food material should be avoided as much as possible.

Don’t even think about chewing on ice, pens, or pencils.

ORAL HYGIENE: Careful tooth brushing is of critical importance. Braces trap food, bacteria, and plaque that can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and leave permanent marks (decalcification), which will never come off the teeth! Brush twice daily and rinse after every meal. Pay special attention to the gum line and the area between the braces and gums. Keep your braces and teeth sparkling clean!

Get your teeth cleaning/scaling done every 4 months until your treatment is complete, post that you can switch to 6 monthly scalings.

Use only prescribed brushes.

WAX: In case a wire is poking on your cheek or bands scratch your lips, gums, cheeks, or tongue, place a small piece of wax over the sharp spot after drying off the area with a tissue. Inform the doctor and fix an appointment.

DISCOMFORT In general, rinsing with warm salt water can relieve soreness of the mouth: (one teaspoon of salt in a half glass of very warm water). Rinse for 60 seconds, then spit out. Rinse every ten or twenty minutes for best results. If pain persists, use a pain reliever or such as Flexon/ combiflam. (Children, please ask your parents first!) Better you call us.

CHECK FOR LOOSE BRACES REGULARLY Loose braces allow decay to proceed under them rapidly. If any braces or wires break or come loose call our office and fix an appointment. save any loose pieces and bring them in with you. Loose or broken braces prolong treatment.

We only get 2 spare brackets inside the kit so 2 breakages will be free, beyond that it will be chargeable as we also have to order from outside.

REGULARITY IN KEEPING APPOINTMENTS IS ESSENTIAL Failed or broken appointments will increase treatment time.

Our Orthodontist is available on pre rescheduled dates twice in a month which we ususally confirm 15 to 30 days prior so please don’t miss appointments else you have to wait for the next appointment as coming for 1 or 2 patients specially is impossible.
